Oscar 2014 Animated Nominations and Predictions

Well, the 86th Academy Awards are among us, and it is that time of year whree predictions will be made. First I will list the nominations of said category and list my predictions below.

Best Animated Feature

  • The Croods
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Ernest and Celestine
  • Frozen
  • The Wind Rises

Alright, the first thing I noticed when I looked at this list is that Monsters University is not ANYWHERE on it. I understand that it is not Pixar’s best, but it is still better than The Croods, and ESPECIALLY Despicable Me 2, which is mediocre at best. I think this has to do with the outrage of Brave winning last year and Pixar winning the award most of the time overall. Anyways, I know for sure that The Croods and Despicable Me 2 will not win, and I have never heard of Ernest and Celestine, so….. no comment. I have heard from the beginning that the overrated Frozen will be battling it out with The Wind Rises. I think it will probably go to Frozen since it is the best (out of these films), and it is bigger Oscar bait than The Wind Rises.

Best Animated Short

  • Feral
  • Get a Horse!
  • Mr. Hublot
  • Possessions
  • Room on the Broom

I don’t watch the shorts……..so………… yeah. I noticed that Pixar is snubbed here too. Very suspect.

What are your predictions for the Academy Awards? Also for updates, since I will be reviewing the animated films released this year, expect The Nut Job review to be up in late January to early February (it takes a few weeks for it to go online). I might make an Annie prediction post, but don’t mark my words for it.

  1. Probably “Frozen” and “Get a Horse” but I haven’t see The Wind Rises or any of the other shorts…I’m really disappointed that Pixar wasn’t nominated for anything. IMO Frozen is the better movie, but it’s close and Pixar definitely deserves recognition. Also, I enjoyed the short they have at the beginning of Monsters University more than Get a Horse. I think it was called Blue Umbrella or something?

  2. The winners should have been Frozen and The Blue Umbrella (what a snub!). Get a Horse was fun and inventive (as was Frozen), but The Blue Umbrella is one of the most artistic shorts I’ve ever seen. Since The Blue Umbrella wasn’t nominated, I’m on board with The Animation Commendation’s picks, but I’m still upset that Pixar was not nominated for MU or its short. 😡

      1. While that may be true, I feel Pixar deserved every single win, except for maybe Toy Story 3 (slightly overrated; Tangled) and Brave (Wreck-It Ralph). Not to mention, Wall-E could have been nominated for best picture. Shame that the Academy feels the needs to split its awards evenly.

  3. My money is on The Wind rises, even though I haven’t seen it yet, and therefore can’t tell if it will win on their own merits over Frozen or because of politics.

I suspect Disney didn’t campaign for Monster’s U because it has no shot of winning, but it might split the votes for the entries they have.

Get a horse is pretty much a shoo in.

  4. I know why the blue umbrella was snubbed. It feels too much like paper man and fedora short from disney in terms of story, and the photorealistic animation won’t help them. Whether its beautiful or not, a good story is the most important. Get a horse was unexpected and surprising in boh animation style and story.
But I honestly don’t understand mu getting snubbed. Its better than despicable me 3….
My picks r either frozen or wind rises, and get a horse
