My opinion right after watching film

My opinion right after watching the film is that I have absolutely no care for it whatsoever. I was very bored throughout the entire film, and it was just delaying the inevitable. I am getting sick of the trend in animated films, where production wants to follow trendy games, and make a film about it. This year is disappointing me so far, though this film was not as horrible as I expected to it be, like Ratchet and Clank.

Production

The film started production, and was announced in 2012, where the cast and imagery was released on October 2014. Sony and Rovio spent about $100 million on marketing and distribution, making it the largest budgeted film made in Finland.

Story

The film starts in the anthropomorphic world of Bird Island, and our main character named Red (Jason Sudeikis) causes a bird to be hatched prematurely, and shows up to his gig right before the party ends. After being told that the payment will be on him, he throws the bird at the customer. We soon learn that everyone on the island is a complete douchebag, which includes our main character, leading the world to be an overly violent and unsettling place. After going to trial for the incident, Red is forced to go to anger management classes, which is fair.

So he goes to his first anger management class, where he is introduced to his instructor Matilda (Maya Rudolph), Chuck (Josh Gad), Terence (Sean Penn), and Bomb (Danny McBride). They each have their own issues, but are looking forward to get to know Red, who shooes them off consistently. It is hard for me to feel bad for anyone.

We soon realize that Matilda has her own issues, and tries to hold her composure as best as she can.

These green pigs soon after joins the island, and seem to be very welcoming and friendly. We of course know that they are the villains since…… I am sure you have played the game, so if this is supposed to be a surprise, then……. no. Red’s house that took 5 years to build was crushed by these pigs. Bird Island welcomes the pigs, and gets along with them, despite the fact that it is obvious the pigs are trying to take over the island.

Red becomes increasingly paranoid about these new creatures, and had the assistance of Chuck and Bomb to hijack and to sneak into their ship to find any dirt they could on the pigs. They end up getting caught, and the pigs cover their asses pretty well to the point where the three of them is shamed in front of the entire island. Red has them go travel to see the Mighty Eagle, who is like a god-like presence to Bird Island, but whom seems to live in the highest mountain of the island. They meet the Mighty Eagle, but it is clear he is a shell of his former self, meaning overweight, delusional, self-involved, and seems ot be in retirement.

The humor in the film irks me. When they are introduced to theeagle, he is peeing in the water that they were all swimming on. He then has them singing a pointless song. After the eagle walks away from them, and Red takes his binoculars to see that the pigs are stealing their crap, and are plotting something huge. The eagle refuses to help them because he is a shell, despite being the only bird who can fly.

After the pigs get what they want, they pretty much destroy Bird Island, after sailing back to Piggy Island. All of the birds are devastated because their eggs are gone, and their homes have been destructed. All of the birds that refused to listen to him and hated him are now asking him for help, since he was the only one who had a bad feeling about them.

We finally get to the climax of the film, which is the “angry birds” part, as all of the birds are out for vengeance, and are planning for a complete battle. They all travel to Piggy Island, and all of the mechanisms that we see in the game are created, and used to launch these angry birds to kill the pigs. So after all of that stuff, Piggy Island is defeated, and they manage to get their eggs back. I forgot to mention that the Mighty Eagle came last minute to help retrieve the eggs back as well. There are a lot of unique scenes, which is because the animation is utilized as well and intriguingly as it can. Apparently the Eagle planned this the entire time, just so the birds can have faith in themselves, instead of just relying on him for everything, and Bird Island rebuilds Red’s house, and it is in the town instead of the outskirts. We come to see that some of the pigs have survived, and are planning on coming back to steal the eggs, which means……….. SEQUEL.

Alright, so this film is not as bad and as boring as I thought after the first watch. I do think it is a bit too mean-spirited, and I do think the story is very thin. The characters could have been developed a bit better, but there is a sense of charm to it, and you can tell that there was effort put into it. It is not the worst, but not the best film. I was not really fuming in anger, but it is still not my type of film. It is alright, though this film came out a year or two after the trend of Angry Birds ended.

Characters

The characters are…….. decent. They do have a personality, and are not overall irritating, but there is still not much to them at all. You cannot really invest into them much as characters, but they are not intolerable. I will say that I like the dynamic between the three main characters.

red
Everyone treats him like crap, but he treats everyone like crap, so I was conflicted as to whether I feel bad on him or not. He is an orphan, but seems like one of the only ones who has some sense of common sense. He is a decent main character.
3b3958d4d419ddc418196b4692796214
Chuck is just the hyper one.
bomb
Bomb is just the slower one.
matilda
Matilda is the three of their management instructors, who is a bit loony.
mighty-eagle
He was the hero of the island, but retired and lost his way. He does turn around at the end of the film, and tried to make it seem like it was his plan all along, but I don’t believe it. Just bad humor.

Animation

What I will say about the animation is very nice. It is obviously very cartoonish, since the style of the game is very cartoonish. The style was carried through into this film pretty well, and I really like the backgrounds as well. I have little to no complaints about the film, other than being shocked with how the movement is not as exaggerated as I thought it would be.

Music

The music is not bad at all, I will say that…… It is just that there is nothing special or really memorable about it. I guess it carries over the specific scene well enough, and I do not remember it was the same in the game. I guess it is fine. To each their own. I was not expecting much to begin with.

Reception at Release

When the film was released on May 20th 2016 (it was released in early May in Europe), it made $107.5 million domestically, and $238.9 million overseas, with an international amount of $3464 million. It is the second highest-grossing game based on a video game in the world, behind Warcraft.

It received a lot of mixed reviews critically despite the financial success. A lot of people found it more entertaining than they thought, and liked how they handled anger and emotions, while others thought that it was just a pathetic marketing ploy to follow a trend, and there is nothing worthwhile in it.

Final Score

Story: 5.5/10

Characters: 4.5/10

Animation: 9/10

Music: 6.5/10

= 25.5/40 = 64%

  1. I was mixed on this. The animation was nice and I thought it had some clever moments. But the messaging I found strange. They are basically saying happiness makes you gullible and dumb. You should be angry like Red…Strange

    1. Yeah, the message was a bit confusing. Like, they wanted us to relate to and feel bad for Red, but they show that a lot of the problems he has, he brings it on himself. If they showed that there should be a mix between the two, than it would be better.

      1. Yeah I was expecting like a Grinch story where the angry character learns to be good not the reverse! Still I think it has potential
