P Couples Analysis: Mike and Celia

First thoughts right after watching the Movie

My first impression of this relationship right after watching the movie is that it’s slightly abusive if I was to be honest. It’s such a disaster in the making, but because it is so minor, it’s hard to pick up.  Pixar interactions are kind of weak if they aren’t friendships, and this is the most blatant case out of the canon.

Summary

Mike and Celia’s first interaction in the film is when he walks into work with his friend Sully,  and approaches her receptionist desk. Their first lines together are “googly-bear”, and “smoochy-poo”, so we instantly know that they are overly affectionate with one another, which could be as some sort of intimacy. It is Celia’s birthday, and she excitedly asks if they are going out, which Mike replies that they are going to the biggest restaurant in Monstropolis. As he leaves, Mike serenades her about them spending one on one time.

Mike is in the locker with his best friend, ranting about who he thinks Celia is the one, thanking Sully for the reservations. Sully agrees to doing Mike’s paperwork, so he can leave work early to go to the reservation with Celia. He was about to cancel or push back their date, but Sully covered for him, and you could hear the concern in her voice.

We skip a few scenes to see the couple at dinner, and Celia is claiming that this is the best birthday ever. Mike tells her that he was astounded by her looks when he first saw her, and reassures her that he likes everything about her. It’s clear that they are in a stage of infatuation, since their conversation is not deep in any sense, and all of their dialogue is filled with infatuation, like when people are first dating. When Sully crashes the dinner to tell Mike about his dilemma, things take a turn for the worst in their relationship.

Celia sees the two of them talk in secret, and is confused, so of course she wants to know what is going on. Mike doesn’t tell her, and runs in panic to help Sully, but she gets ran out of the restaurant. When they are all outside, Celia is grabbed away by a person in a yellow suit, and Mike tries to go with her, but Sully pulls him away.

It is the next morning, and Celia approaches him angrily (with her hair hissing at him as well), ranting about how last night was one of the worst nights in her life. She whines about how she thought he cared about her, and Mike tells her that he does, and that he thought she liked sushi. Celia rants about how it has nothing to do with sushi, and Mike forces her into a kiss to distract Randall. Of course she slaps him, and ends up on the floor, whining about how he is leaving, and muttering about men. So what I got from this is that she is extremely insecure, and hot-headed. I do feel bad for her, but she is a bit annoying at times, but Mike is annoying as well. Honestly…….. it’s clear that they don’t know much about one another.

About 20-30 minutes later, Mike ends up back in the company, and Celia LITERALLY pounces on him. I do not support this, because it shows a potentially abusive relationship if things got wrong. Celia DEMANDS that she knows the truth or else they will break up. Mike tells her everything that has happened, but she refuses to “believe those lies”. When Boo pops up behind them, she lets go of Mike, and then takes her wrath on Randall.

She is back at her desk, and as Randall is chasing her boyfriend and his friend, she creates an announcement regarding the monster scores that causes everyone to surround Randall, thus letting her boyfriend escape. Their final scene together is shown they kiss, right before she brings the box that contains a magazine that involves Mike and Sully on a cover (though he is covered by the bar-code), and the couple gush over it.

Final Thoughts

My final thoughts is that they are in an infatuation phase, and they are kind of unstable. Nothing else to really say. Just kind of disappointing, and borderline abusive.
